Arduino is open source software prototyping platform on user friendly software & hardware. The arduino boards create devices that interact with sensors and actuators for example light on a sensor, turning on an LED, twitter message, light on a sensor etc. There have been thousands of different projects users have been experiencing with arduino; teachers & students in the classroom, artist designing prototypes, musicians use it to experiment with new musical instruments basically anyone can use arduino.
The arduino software (IDE) is an open-source software that’s based on open processing code which then users can upload it to the board.
